Skiing and the weather: should you cancel your lesson if it snows too much?

Published on 23/12/2025 - Written by Coline
In the mountains, the weather can change quickly. Rain, wind, clouds... the big blue sky isn't always there on the slopes. But what happens if it snows too heavily on the day of your ski lesson?

While your first instinct might be to cancel your lesson, in reality, depending on the conditions, it's still possible to ski in the resort.

esf Les Menuires guides you through the conditions for cancelling lessons in the event of bad weather, as well as the best way to make the most of the activities on offer in the resort, whatever the weather!

Does heavy snow prevent skiing in Les Menuires?

When you take up a winter sports activity such as skiing, it's natural to wonder whether bad weather conditions might have an impact on the organisation of your lessons. However, contrary to what you might think, heavy snowfall does not generally prevent skiing.

Note, however, that too much snow can lead to certain exceptional situations, such as a high avalanche risk, non-existent visibility or violent winds, which can lead to the closure of ski lifts. In such circumstances, ski or snowboard lessons cannot be provided.

In short, if it snows too much, the ski lessons are maintained as long as the ski lifts remain open. Your esf instructor will be waiting for you at the meeting point to guarantee you a safe and enjoyable experience!

Ski and snow lessons: equip yourself accordingly!

If you want to make the most of your skiing or snowboarding session in the snow, you need to be properly equipped. With clothing and accessories that are sufficiently warm and water-resistant, you'll have the best conditions for learning or perfecting your technique on the slopes.

So don't forget to bring a goggle suitable for snow and fog, to ensure you have good visibility even in snowy conditions. You'll also need a waterproof ski jacket and trousers to keep you dry throughout your session.

Gloves and warm, breathable thermal under-layers are the perfect finishing touch, providing effective protection from the cold and damp.
