Every year, you enjoy the winter snows, hitting the slopes and enjoying the pleasures of the slopes, but do you know what your skiing ability is?

Ability, technical skills, etc. - it's not always easy to assess. To help you see things more clearly, here we explain the different levels of adult skiing. It's the perfect opportunity to take stock and book a suitable ski lesson for even more thrills this winter!

Why is it important to know your skiing ability?

Beyond the simple curiosity of knowing more about your abilities on the slopes, defining your skiing level is essential to your progress, but above all it's necessary to have the right equipment for you.

Whether you want to hire or buy your equipment, the professionals will take your experience into account to advise you on the most suitable models.

Whether it's ski boots, a pair of skis, boots or a snowboard, the rigidity of your boots and the technical qualities of your equipment will evolve according to this criterion to ensure you have the best possible skiing experience.

What are the different levels of adult skiing?

There's no age limit for discovering winter sports and taking up skiing. From beginners to the most experienced riders, the ski levels introduced by the French ski school ESF and ENSA provide a suitable assessment for everyone.

Level 1ᵉʳ SKI

You've never set foot on skis, but you're already dreaming of your first descents? With a beginner's level ski lesson, you can learn the basics of this winter sport and get to grips with new equipment so you can conquer the most beautiful snowy slopes.

With the advice of your instructor, you'll learn to :

  • know how to use your equipment independently
  • use the ski lifts;
  • make snowplough turns
  • control your speed on serpentine trajectories or in a direct line on the slope;
  • keep your balance and glide over smooth terrain on a gentle slope.

Level Class 1

If you can already control your snowplough trajectories and remain stable on your skis, you have a Class 1 level.

During your ski lesson, the objectives will evolve to enable you to become more independent in your skiing by managing to :

  • control your speed;
  • master the turning step with a more or less straight trajectory;
  • master the skating step.

Level Class 2

If you can control your speed and finish your turns with your skis parallel on a gentle slope, you have a Class 2 ski level.

With the help of an instructor, you can continue to progress on the slopes and this time learn to :

  • make turns with parallel skis on a medium and varied slope;
  • make godilles, or short turns, using your poles;
  • make a direct line on increasingly varied slopes;
  • Make your first skids;
  • appreciate the different types of snow (packed, light, powder or wet) and terrain (slopes, bumps, etc.).

Level Class 3

Are you familiar with the different types of snow and the specific types of terrain encountered, have you mastered the art of grooming and can you keep your skis parallel? You have a Class 3 level.

Your next objectives will be to :

  • Perfect your wedges with shorter turns using your poles;
  • to achieve rounded and festooned sideslips (a sequence of sideslips and direct downhill tracks);
  • master the cut curve by carrying your weight on the edges of your skis;
  • gain ease and speed on all types of terrain.

Whatever your experience, choosing the right ski lesson will allow you to progress at your own pace and have even more fun on the slopes with the ESF instructors!
